Students at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville celebrated a day of reading during a special visit from the Book Fairies on Nov. 14.  

Founded in 2012, the Book Fairies gathers new and gently used books and places them into the hands of eager children living in under-resourced areas across Long Island, New York City, and internationally. At Northwest, students met with members from Book Fairies in the school’s gymnasium to select their own book. Additionally, the organization celebrated a milestone as they donated their 5,000,000th book.  

Second grader Riley Smith became the golden ticket recipient when she selected the book, “Makeda Makes a Birthday Treat” by Olugbemisola Rhuday Perkovich.

On Oct. 29, the Amityville Fire Department held an interactive lesson on fire safety at Northwest Elementary School.

In conjunction with Fire Prevention Month, students gathered in the school’s gymnasium as firefighters held a presentation to discuss fire and emergency protocol at home. After the presentation, students walked to the school’s main parking lot where they got see an actual fire engine truck, a ladder truck, and an ambulance.

With assistance getting in and out, they entered each vehicle, walked around it and learned about the tools, equipment and uniforms that are used to put out a fire.

On Oct. 24, staff, students and families Northwest Elementary School in Amityville celebrated Hispanic Heritage.

During the evening event, students participated in presentations, dance and musical performances in the school’s gymnasium. Students and parents were treated to snacks, beef and chicken empanadas, and light refreshments after the performances.

The district would like to thank everyone involved in helping to organize Northwest’s annual celebration.

Elementary schools in the Amityville School District participated in numerous activities to celebrate Unity Day on Oct. 16.  

Unity Day, which is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, is a national effort to prevent bullying through the promotion of kindness and compassion. At each school, students and staff members wore orange as a tangible representation of the supportive, universal message that each school aims to promote ant-bullying, and is united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. 

At Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, students participated in a variety of activities to promote awareness including classroom lessons, buddy bench lessons and a school Unity Chain which is displayed in their front lobby. 

Students at Northwest Elementary School watched a read aloud video about the importance of Unity Day, which sparked a great conversation and writing prompt. Students shared their experiences, suggested appropriate solutions that reflected the story, and ways to treat others with kindness.

On Oct. 8, second graders in Ms. Smith and Ms. Faulkner's class at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville held an interactive lesson on sentence editing.  

Students and teachers were dressed in scrubs and masks as they became “sentence surgeons.” They used their scissors and glue to fix up “sick” sentences or sentences with mistakes. Additionally, parents were invited to help students in the “operating” room.
