More books, more choices and more smiles are coming to Northwest Elementary School through a new partnership with The Book Fairies’ Building Home Libraries program.

The initiative began after Mrs. Sherry McGrath of The Book Fairies connected with Northwest social worker Ms. Debra Lee about bringing the program to the school. Throughout the 2026–2027 school year, the goal is for each student to add 10 books to their home library, giving children more opportunities to read, explore their interests and continue learning beyond the classroom.

Northwest held its first book fair from Sept. 22-25, with each class receiving time to browse and select two books to bring home. Students enthusiastically searched for their favorites, with books in Spanish and Haitian Creole also available to support the school’s multilingual learners.

Beyond building home libraries, the program encourages students to make their own reading choices, discover new interests and develop the curiosity and confidence that support lifelong learning. It also reflects the New York State Portrait of a Graduate’s emphasis on recognizing students’ diverse identities, languages and experiences as strengths.
