Edmund W. Miles Middle School Comes Together for Unity Day

Edmund W. Miles Middle School came together for a schoolwide Unity Day focused on kindness, respect, inclusion, emotional wellness and creating a stronger sense of belonging for every student.
The day began with an inspiring keynote presentation from Mr. Raishawn J. Harris, founder of Extra Handz For Life, titled “You Belong Here: Building a School Culture That Cares.” Speaking to students across all grade levels, Mr. Harris challenged them to think about how their words, actions and everyday choices can help create a school where everyone feels welcomed, valued and connected.
Students continued those conversations through grade-level breakout sessions with Mr. Harris and classroom Unity Day activities focused on kindness, respect, inclusion and well-being.
Unity Day also extended into physical education classes, where Ms. Cathy Riva led students through special mindfulness activities in the small gym. The activities encouraged students to slow down, focus on the present moment and explore strategies that support both emotional wellness and physical well-being. By incorporating mindfulness into the day, students experienced another practical way to care for themselves and contribute to a positive school environment.
More than a single presentation, Unity Day provided students with opportunities throughout the school day to listen, reflect, participate and connect. The schoolwide effort reinforced the idea that a positive school culture is a shared responsibility and that every student has the ability to make a difference in the way others experience their school community.
